EBSCOhost databases, like Academic Search Premier and CINAHL Ultimate, will be migrated to a new user interface on January 7, 2025. This is the same interface used by EBSCO Discovery, the library's search engine on our homepage. Individual unique EBSCOhost databases had remained on the old platform for the past year, but they will be updated to the new one tomorrow.

EBSCO carefully planned the transition to the new interface to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth transition. You should not need to update links or make any changes yourself. The only difference will be sometime on January 7, when you access a specific EBSCO database, you will see the new interface instead of the old one. If you've been using EBSCO Discovery, then you already know the basic features.

The following links lead to EBSCO databases, a tutorial on the new interface, and a “quick start guide” that describes search features to expect.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the PG Library staff.

After the end of this year, December 31, 2024, access will stop to two PG Library services.

One of those is the database Skillsoft. For users of Skillsoft, we recommend using O’Reilly, a similar resource packed with ebooks and videos on IT and business topics.

The second service is EZProxy. This service is more invisible to students and faculty using Library-licensed resources, but EZProxy is an authentication system. However, in November of last year, we migrated to OpenAthens, a modern authentication system with services and features that better fit our university’s needs. The PG Library and Curriculum & Innovation teams worked tirelessly this year to replace old links that used EZProxy with new links that used OpenAthens in Brightspace and the Library’s website and guides. This preparation enables us to let our subscription with EZProxy cease at the end of the year as well. For Library and course content in Brightspace, no action is needed on your part.

How does this affect you?

On or after December 31, 2024, if you have any saved or bookmarked links to Skillsoft or links to other resources using EZProxy (look for “libauth.purdueglobal.edu” in the URL), these links will no longer work. If you save a lot of links in documents, spreadsheets, browser bookmark tools, or citation managers, you may need to update those if they were made before November 2023. You can find information about how to link to items in our Guide to Reading Lists.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

For some users, EBSCO Discovery and EBSCO databases can result in an error message when using OpenAthens to authenticate. You may see an OpenAthens error message of "Looping - SP redirecting back to the login point" when trying to authenticate. We are aware of the issue and working with EBSCO and OpenAthens support on a resolution. At this time, no other databases are affected.

We have confirmation from several students that clearing cookies in Chrome resolved the issue for them. Here are the steps to follow:

  • In Google Chrome, at the top right, click the "three dots" menu and then choose the option to "Delete Browsing Data."
  • In the next window, click the option to delete "Cookies and other site data."
  • Click the "Delete Data" button.
  • Restart Google Chrome (fully close it and reopen it).
  • Navigate directly to library.purdueglobal.edu and then conduct a search with the search box on our homepage. The search box leads to EBSCO Discovery.

You can find more information about clearing cookies and using Chrome's Incognito mode on the Library's FAQ. Read the "How do I clear cookies or use Chrome's Incognito Mode?" FAQ. Incognito mode is a good second step to try, as it not only blocks cookies but also plugins, and while not confirmed, a plugin like an ad-blocker may be causing the issue.

If clearing cookies and the above doesn't help, use these alternative links to EBSCO Discovery and EBSCO databases to conduct your research:

If you still cannot access EBSCO content, please contact the library with the following information:

  • Your operating system (Windows 11 or MacOS)
  • Browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
  • Internet Service Provider (Xfinity, RCN, Optimum, etc.)
  • Troubleshooting that you tried already

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to anyone affected.

O’Reilly for Higher Education, a resource with e-books and videos primarily focused on information technology and business, has updated its authentication for compatibility with OpenAthens. OpenAthens is what almost all other library resources use to authenticate. The update will be primarily behind-the-scenes to you, but you should experience quicker load times and increased stability.

The most significant change for most students will be the ability to use O’Reilly’s mobile apps. The apps are downloadable from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. For links, see O’Reilly’s page on apps.

Once downloaded, enter your student email (the one ending in @student.purdueglobal.edu). You will then see the regular OpenAthens login options you see anytime you authenticate with a PG Library resource. Follow the prompts, and you’ll have access to all of O’Reilly’s content through the app.

Do you just want to use the normal web interface? Visit O’Reilly for Higher Education.

On November 15, 2023, you will see a revised library website and a new version of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). You don’t need to wait to see the new website and new EDS, however, you can preview them today!

New EDS homepage

The largest change you’ll see is from the new EDS. New EDS features include:

  • Ground-up redevelopment of EDS.

  • Improved search and interface usability.

  • Concept map feature to help develop a search strategy.

  • New Publication Finder interface to locate specific journals, books, or other publications.

  • Enhanced "MyEBSCO" account profile features, including project folders.

Interested in taking a look?

Access the New EDS today.

Read more about New EDS and view training videos.

You can also preview what the new PG Library website will look like. The new website has improved navigation and features based on feedback from students and faculty. It also integrates the new version of EDS. Please note this site is a preview and that some links may not work as you expect. We don’t advise bookmarking any pages for future reference.

Preview the new PG Library website.

Some items of note:

  • The new authentication system, OpenAthens, will now allow all faculty and staff to login to Library resources using their OneLogin credentials. Students will continue to use their PG Campus credentials.
  • The change to OpenAthens and to the new EDS will require most links in courses to need to be updated. The Library is working with Curriculum on a plan. All current links in courses will still work post-migration.
  • MyEBSCO and ProQuest eBook Central user accounts will not migrate automatically to the new system. Read the "How to Merge Personal User Accounts" FAQ from EBSCO for details. Note this only applies to MyEBSCO accounts with a unique username and password, unfortunately, those made with Gmail SSO cannot migrate and users will need to export their saved content. For ProQuest eBook Central enthusiasts, read how to export items.
  • While unavailable at launch, EBSCO is now testing AI features for future incorporation like natural language search, improved evaluation of search results through summaries and key insights, and conversational interactivity with source documents.

We will launch the new EDS, new website, and a new underlying technology to authenticate you into resources called OpenAthens, on November 15, 2023. Stay tuned for more as we get closer!

Today you may notice a new link when using EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), the search box on our homepage. In addition to the Full Text Finder link you see when EDS is linking out to sources external to EBSCO, like from ProQuest, HeinOnline, or other publishers and vendors, you'll now see a Locate Full Text link for articles. The Locate Full Text link is powered by LibKey, a tool that helps quickly connect you to articles, whether they're in a library database or published for free online.

Examples of PDF or HTML Full Text links being hosted by EBSCO and Locate Full Text links leading to external sources

The way it works is as follows:

  • Click the Locate Full Text link.
  • In a new browser tab, you'll see see either:
    • A LibKey page with a direct link to the article.
    • EBSCO's Full Text Finder tool as a backup, for instances when LibKey can't find it.

Example of LibKey linking page

After the first time you see the LibKey page in a session, you can actually tell it to remember your preferences, and it will just forward you to the article with no intermediary page. This should save you a lot of time finding the full text of articles, as EBSCO's native Full Text Finder tool sometimes could only link to a journal's homepage, for instance. If LibKey knows where the article is it will always bring you directly to it.

LibKey also has a browser plugin called LibKey Nomad that will help link to the full text of works when browsing websites and search engines like Google Scholar and Wikipedia. Visit the LibKey Nomad information page for more on this plugin.

Additionally, LibKey has a companion tool called BrowZine, which offers a different way to browse through journals available from the PG Library's subscriptions. Visit the BrowZine homepage.

More training on these tools will be available in the future, but we wanted to enable them as quickly as possible to help you get to the resources you need more efficiently. Please reach out to the library staff if you have any questions.
