For some users, EBSCO Discovery and EBSCO databases can result in an error message when using OpenAthens to authenticate. You may see an OpenAthens error message of "Looping - SP redirecting back to the login point" when trying to authenticate. We are aware of the issue and working with EBSCO and OpenAthens support on a resolution. At this time, no other databases are affected.

We have confirmation from several students that clearing cookies in Chrome resolved the issue for them. Here are the steps to follow:

  • In Google Chrome, at the top right, click the "three dots" menu and then choose the option to "Delete Browsing Data."
  • In the next window, click the option to delete "Cookies and other site data."
  • Click the "Delete Data" button.
  • Restart Google Chrome (fully close it and reopen it).
  • Navigate directly to library.purdueglobal.edu and then conduct a search with the search box on our homepage. The search box leads to EBSCO Discovery.

You can find more information about clearing cookies and using Chrome's Incognito mode on the Library's FAQ. Read the "How do I clear cookies or use Chrome's Incognito Mode?" FAQ. Incognito mode is a good second step to try, as it not only blocks cookies but also plugins, and while not confirmed, a plugin like an ad-blocker may be causing the issue.

If clearing cookies and the above doesn't help, use these alternative links to EBSCO Discovery and EBSCO databases to conduct your research:

If you still cannot access EBSCO content, please contact the library with the following information:

  • Your operating system (Windows 11 or MacOS)
  • Browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
  • Internet Service Provider (Xfinity, RCN, Optimum, etc.)
  • Troubleshooting that you tried already

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to anyone affected.

O’Reilly for Higher Education, a resource with e-books and videos primarily focused on information technology and business, has updated its authentication for compatibility with OpenAthens. OpenAthens is what almost all other library resources use to authenticate. The update will be primarily behind-the-scenes to you, but you should experience quicker load times and increased stability.

The most significant change for most students will be the ability to use O’Reilly’s mobile apps. The apps are downloadable from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. For links, see O’Reilly’s page on apps.

Once downloaded, enter your student email (the one ending in @student.purdueglobal.edu). You will then see the regular OpenAthens login options you see anytime you authenticate with a PG Library resource. Follow the prompts, and you’ll have access to all of O’Reilly’s content through the app.

Do you just want to use the normal web interface? Visit O’Reilly for Higher Education.

On November 15, 2023, you will see a revised library website and a new version of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). You don’t need to wait to see the new website and new EDS, however, you can preview them today!

New EDS homepage

The largest change you’ll see is from the new EDS. New EDS features include:

  • Ground-up redevelopment of EDS.

  • Improved search and interface usability.

  • Concept map feature to help develop a search strategy.

  • New Publication Finder interface to locate specific journals, books, or other publications.

  • Enhanced "MyEBSCO" account profile features, including project folders.

Interested in taking a look?

Access the New EDS today.

Read more about New EDS and view training videos.

You can also preview what the new PG Library website will look like. The new website has improved navigation and features based on feedback from students and faculty. It also integrates the new version of EDS. Please note this site is a preview and that some links may not work as you expect. We don’t advise bookmarking any pages for future reference.

Preview the new PG Library website.

New PG Library homepage

Some items of note:

  • The new authentication system, OpenAthens, will now allow all faculty and staff to login to Library resources using their OneLogin credentials. Students will continue to use their PG Campus credentials.
  • The change to OpenAthens and to the new EDS will require most links in courses to need to be updated. The Library is working with Curriculum on a plan. All current links in courses will still work post-migration.
  • MyEBSCO and ProQuest eBook Central user accounts will not migrate automatically to the new system. Read the "How to Merge Personal User Accounts" FAQ from EBSCO for details. Note this only applies to MyEBSCO accounts with a unique username and password, unfortunately, those made with Gmail SSO cannot migrate and users will need to export their saved content. For ProQuest eBook Central enthusiasts, read how to export items.
  • While unavailable at launch, EBSCO is now testing AI features for future incorporation like natural language search, improved evaluation of search results through summaries and key insights, and conversational interactivity with source documents.

We will launch the new EDS, new website, and a new underlying technology to authenticate you into resources called OpenAthens, on November 15, 2023. Stay tuned for more as we get closer!

Today you may notice a new link when using EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), the search box on our homepage. In addition to the Full Text Finder link you see when EDS is linking out to sources external to EBSCO, like from ProQuest, HeinOnline, or other publishers and vendors, you'll now see a Locate Full Text link for articles. The Locate Full Text link is powered by LibKey, a tool that helps quickly connect you to articles, whether they're in a library database or published for free online.

Examples of PDF or HTML Full Text links being hosted by EBSCO and Locate Full Text links leading to external sources

The way it works is as follows:

  • Click the Locate Full Text link.
  • In a new browser tab, you'll see see either:
    • A LibKey page with a direct link to the article.
    • EBSCO's Full Text Finder tool as a backup, for instances when LibKey can't find it.

Example of LibKey linking page

After the first time you see the LibKey page in a session, you can actually tell it to remember your preferences, and it will just forward you to the article with no intermediary page. This should save you a lot of time finding the full text of articles, as EBSCO's native Full Text Finder tool sometimes could only link to a journal's homepage, for instance. If LibKey knows where the article is it will always bring you directly to it.

LibKey also has a browser plugin called LibKey Nomad that will help link to the full text of works when browsing websites and search engines like Google Scholar and Wikipedia. Visit the LibKey Nomad information page for more on this plugin.

Additionally, LibKey has a companion tool called BrowZine, which offers a different way to browse through journals available from the PG Library's subscriptions. Visit the BrowZine homepage.

BrowZine's subject page for business journals

More training on these tools will be available in the future, but we wanted to enable them as quickly as possible to help you get to the resources you need more efficiently. Please reach out to the library staff if you have any questions.

SAGE logo

You now have access to SAGE Video, in addition to SAGE Research Methods added earlier this year. SAGE Video showcases highly relevant educational videos across key social, behavioral, and health science disciplines. Categories include business, counseling, criminal justice, education, nursing, and more. Each collection includes a breadth of video types to support diverse learning and research needs. All videos are fully citeable with searchable transcripts, custom clip creation, and embedding, and include other video player features that make implementing video into the classroom and for independent use, user-friendly and easily accessible.

Our access to SAGE Video is unique, as we have access to all videos on the SAGE Video platform from 06/01/2022 - 05/31/2023. Purdue Global will be in an evaluation period with SAGE Video during this time, with all videos made accessible to all users. After the evaluation period is over, the most-used videos will be kept permanently, which we estimate to be around the top 400+.

If you are a faculty course lead and select a SAGE video for use in your course, please contact the PG Library and let us know so we can guarantee its inclusion after the evaluation period is over, though we should be able to track this via usage reports.

ProQuest logo

The PG Library is thrilled to announce we now have access to additional resources from ProQuest, creating a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary research tool that now offers more than "just" articles. This comprehensive research point starts with ProQuest Central (which the PG Library has had for years). It adds three new components: Academic Video Online with 70,000 video titles spanning a wide range of subjects, eBook Central with an estimated 90,000 new titles (200,000+ total), and Dissertations & Theses Global with over 2.5 million dissertations and theses from universities around the world.

All links to "ProQuest Central" will be re-labeled to just "ProQuest" to represent the comprehensiveness of the platform and allow for future additions to integrate with this central link seamlessly.

You can also visit the individual new components with the links below.

This package of resources is also known as ProQuest One Academic. Below is an infographic with more details on the components of our newly enhanced version of ProQuest.

slide showing facts about ProQuest One Academic

Additionally, we now have access to ProQuest Statistical Insight, a separate database that provides abstracting, indexing, and full text for publications from hundreds of public domain and licensed sources. The Statistical Insight Collection spans millions of full-text reports and more than 1 million published tables on thousands of different topics. It provides fast and easy access to statistical information produced by U.S. federal agencies, states, private organizations, and major intergovernmental organizations. It also offers broad perspectives and insight on long-term national trends and implications paired with the ability to narrow results. Whether users are looking for tables, statistical reports, publication abstracts, or datasets, results are ranked by relevance.

The PG Library is incredibly excited to announce that we have added four new resources to our collections. This is in addition to IBISWorld added last month. All combined, these resources help the Library better fulfill its mission to connect our community to the information they need. In particular, this set of resources focuses on providing statistical and ready reference information, helping to answer foundational questions about topics, and providing the data needed to practice necessary skills like analyzing trends and interpreting statistics. The resources are available immediately, and links have been added to our Databases A-Z page and integrated into EBSCO Discovery Service where possible.

Below are details about the new resources and bookmarkable links to each.

EBSCO logo

Downloading short passages has always been possible, but starting today (December 2, 2021), full digital downloads of ebooks from EBSCO are availableYou can download ebooks in their entirety by clicking the Full Download link in EBSCO Discovery Service or the EBSCO eBooks database.

For many titles, you will simply be able to download a PDF or EPUB version of the book in one download.  However, since the downloads are for an entire book, there is a limit to the download duration for most books, so for these titles you can also think of it as a digital checkout or borrowing of the ebook. Additionally, for most books, it requires using a MyEBSCO account or logging in with your PG Google account and either Adobe Digital Editions (for PC/Mac and mobile) or the official EBSCO app (Apple iOS/iPadOS and Android). It may take some setup the first time you use it, but if there are specific titles you will use heavily during your current course, it may be worth the extra bit of effort to download the title to either the Adobe or EBSCO apps.  The options available to you will appear when you click the Full Download link.

For more information, see our FAQ entry How do I use the "Full Download" link in EBSCO eBooks?

There are new features to the APA's Academic Writer tool available through the PG Library.  Highlights include:

  • Learning Commons FAQs

  • Orientation Lessons

  • Version History

  • Grammar Check

  • Reference Tagging

More information and details are below:

If you haven’t logged into Academic Writer, or if you’re a new user, there are some helpful new features that will enhance your Academic Writer experience.

After logging into Academic Writer, select the drop-down menu from the Welcome link. Clicking on Site Help will open a new window where you can access immediate answers to the most frequently asked questions about how to use Academic Writer. Browse through the articles, or enter your search terms to find articles relevant to your question.

Please note that Site Help is not a knowledge base of APA style questions, but rather it is a knowledge base about using Academic Writer.

Back to the drop-down menu, clicking on Orientation will provide you with various quick guides and tutorials about how to use Academic Writer. Selecting Getting Started with Academic Writer will show you how to navigate and use the site, while selecting Writing in Academic Writer will provide detailed guidance about how to use the Writing Center. Please note that both of these links are also available directly on the homepage, too, for quick and easy access.

Selecting My Papers from the My File Cabinet drop-down menu will bring you to a great new tool allowing you to browse version histories of your paper. This can be especially helpful if content failed to save or was lost. Version history enables you to view and revert to previous versions of your paper. Using the comparison screen allows you to compare previous versions with the current version of your paper.

If you’ve used Academic Writer in the past, you may be aware of the spell checker feature, but if you haven’t logged in to your account in a while, you may not be aware of the new grammar check feature! Much like the grammar checker in a Word document, Academic Writer underlines words and phrases to flag possible errors. This is a default feature, but if it becomes distracting, it can be turned off by click on the ABC button:

Finally, Academic Writer now provides an easy new way of organizing and tracking your references. Tagging is Academic Writer’s answer to folders. Tags can be added as you create your references and are then visible in your References list. Tags can also be searched by keyword in the top right search bar. If you want to go back and add tags to previously created references, simply click on the edit icon next to your desired reference, and then add your tags. Keep in mind that you can add multiple tags to a reference; just separate them by a comma.

We hope you find these new features helpful. To start using them, visit Academic Writer.

What’s happening?

Starting today, EBSCO’s Business Source Complete has been upgraded to Business Source Ultimate.

How do I start using this resource?

Access to Business Source Ultimate is at the same link as before:

library.purdueglobal.edu/businesssource

What does that mean?

The Ultimate edition of Business Source adds more active peer-reviewed full-text journals, more top business publications, more business videos, Standard & Poor’s Industry Surveys, and ahead-of-print content from several publishers including Springs, Sage, and Wiley. This is all in addition to the company lists and profiles and current business research already previously available in the Complete edition.

Isn’t the search box on the Library’s website EBSCO too?

Yes, it’s from the same vendor and all of the journal content in Business Source Ultimate and most other content is integrated into EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).  However, for business researchers specifically, you’ll benefit from going to the direct interface for Business Source Ultimate if you are looking for company and industry information, as there are additional tools there not available in EDS.

Anything else I should know?

For faculty: Previously not allowed, you can now integrate Harvard Business Review articles into course reading lists and assignments.

The PG Library’s collections have grown in the past few weeks with the additions of many new ebooks and videos. EBSCO eBooks has added over 4,000 new titles as of April 5. We’ve also added over ten ready reference titles to Gale eBooks, including the titles Accessibility and Diversity in the 21st Century University, Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) History, Criminal Justice in America, Small Business Sourcebook, and three Sage research handbooks: Qualitative Data Collection, Qualitative Research in Psychology, and Survey Methodology

However, the largest addition is a new database, O’Reilly for Higher Education. With O’Reilly for Higher Education, you get on-demand access to the latest O’Reilly books, videos, case studies, expert playlists, and interactive learning scenarios, enabling you to improve your knowledge and proficiency in a comprehensive list of areas in IT and business. O'Reilly complements our faculty’s curriculum, prepares students for their future careers, and encourages lifelong learning. This resource is particularly good for technology, computing, and programming skills training and professional development. To check it out, visit O’Reilly for Higher Education today.  For more about O’Reilly before diving in, visit the Guide to O’Reilly.

The PG Library is happy to announce expanded librarian chat service hours and availability!

The PG Library joined a cooperative of libraries last year that provides backup (when we're swamped) and after-hours availability to offer expanded service hours. Feedback on the service has been good, so we've expanded the hours to now cover 12 hours a day, every day, including holidays. The new chat hours are effective immediately.

New Hours Chat hours - Daily: 10:00 am ET - 10:00 pm ET

If you prefer to talk to a librarian from just the PG team, we are on:

Monday - Tuesday: 11:00 am ET - 9:00 pm ET

Wednesday - Friday: 10:00 am ET - 6:00 pm ET

As always, all PG students and faculty are also welcome to email us at library@purdueglobal.edu or schedule a 1-on-1 web meeting appointment.

Health professionals, social workers, and forensic and legal specialists use the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to diagnose and classify mental disorders. In the DSM Library, part of the PG Library's collection of resources, you will find the DSM-5, as well as companion titles like the Handbook of Differential Diagnosis and digital copies of all previous editions of the DSM.

For some pointers on how to best navigate the DSM Library, the PG Library has created a new Guide to the DSM Library, which includes step-by-step instructions on how to navigate the DSM Library, as well as a video demonstrating its key features.  Visit the Guide to the DSM Library now.

EBSCO recently added over 2,000 titles to our ebook subscription.  If you’ve ever used the search box on the PG Library’s homepage, you’re likely familiar with EBSCO’s ebooks and many courses now assign chapters from this ebook collection.  To help you use this resource, we’ve put together a new Guide to EBSCO eBooks, which will walk through this platform’s essential features and tools.  Visit the Guide to EBSCO eBooks.

Today the PG Library website launched two new enhancements.  First, the "Ask Us" tab on the right side of most pages on the PG Library's website and within EBSCO Discovery Service now links to several contact and self-service options instead of a simple email form.  The new support pop-up allows you to instantly see all of our available contact options, including chat, as well as search our F.A.Q. or click on some popular tools to self-assess the answer to your question, including a link to our orientation guide and APA's Academic Writer, the best self-service tool for your APA questions.

Ask Us support options pop-up

Additionally, you can now browse through all of our subject, topic, and course guides from a single point: library.purdueglobal.edu/guides

Once on this new library guides hub, you will see options to browse guides by subject area (including related course guides) or by type, or see an alphabetical list of all guides.

We hope you find these new contact and self-service options useful in your studies.  Please reach out to us should you have any questions.

APA Academic Writer Logo

A big update is coming in August to APA's Academic Writer.  See below for details:

  • Academic Writer will update its tutorials, examples, templates, and writing tools to follow APA Style 7th Edition rules on Monday, August 3, 2020.
  • On Monday, August 3, 2020, Academic Writer may be unavailable for use most or all of the day, while APA’s technical staff update the product.
  • Starting August 4, 2020, or as soon as the update is finished, the new version of Academic Writer will be available.
  • The link to Academic Writer will not change and remain: library.purdueglobal.edu/academicwriter
  • New to Academic Writer? For a preview of changes and an overview video, check out our new Guide to Academic Writer.

Additionally, we want to share that our colleagues in the PG Writing Center have also been working on updating their sources to follow APA 7th Edition rules in recent weeks and all APA instructional resources should finish updating by August 15, 2020.

Timeline reminder:

After these updates, it will be time to start learning the new rules in APA Style 7th Edition. But don't worry, you still have plenty of time! These updates mean we are now entering the second “phase” of PG's APA Style 7th Edition adoption plan:

  • 2019/2020: Students can use either APA 6th or APA 7th editions.
  • August 2020: Start learning the changes in the 7th edition once the Academic Writer update is available.
  • January 1, 2021: This is the deadline! All students must follow only the 7th edition.

The PG Library is happy to announce expanded librarian chat service hours and availability!  The new chat hours will start Wednesday, April 22, 2020:

Sunday - Tuesday: 10:00 am ET - 10:00 pm ET
Wednesday - Saturday: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm ET

To offer expanded service hours, the PG Library is joining a cooperative of libraries to provide expanded chat assistance to students.  PG's librarian team will still monitor and answer chat Monday to Friday, but librarians within the cooperative provide chat on Saturdays and Sundays (and help us out on other days as needed).  This means you'll be able to get research assistance 7 days a week!  Additionally, you may notice the chat interface has changed a little, as we also had to change our chat platform to participate in the chat cooperative.  One of the benefits is we can now link to chat in far more places than we could before.

As always, all PG students and faculty are also welcome to email us at library@purdueglobal.edu or schedule a 1-on-1 web meeting appointment.

The PG Library works with information publishers and vendors to periodically bring free resources and trials for use by our students and faculty.  During the month of April, we have free trial access to three different resources.  First, IBISWorld will mostly appeal to business or any other student needing market and industry research and information.  The other databases are aimed at psychology and education students needing information on tests and measures, Mental Measurements Yearbook and APA PsycTests.

IBISWorld

Gain a quick and intelligent overview of thousands of global industries with IBISWorld.  According to IBISWorld, the features include:

Screenshot of an IBISWorld report.

  • Comprehensive data and analysis that is easy to read and digest
  • Reports available that cover industries in the US, Canada, Australia, Germany, UK and New Zealand
  • Copy & paste our charts, graphs and images for use in presentations and decks
  • Individual reports are 30-40 pages and all follow the same table of contents
  • All reports available with subscription to our online library, plus the option to download as a PDF
  • Reports updated frequently

Try IBISWorld.

Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print

Available from EBSCO and using their familiar search interface, this is how the vendor describes this database: Produced by the Buros Center for Testing at the University of Nebraska, this resource is essential for evaluating contemporary testing instruments. Designed for novices and professionals alike, it contains full-text reviews for test products in psychology, education, business and leadership. In addition, it provides a bibliography to all known commercially available English-language tests currently in print.

Try Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print.

APA PsycTests

Description from the APA: Professionally indexed, the PsycTESTS® database is an extensive collection of items associated with psychological measures, scales, surveys, and other instruments essential to the research needs of professionals, students, and educators across the behavioral and social sciences.

Try APA PsycTests.

Have feedback?

The PG Library greatly values the feedback of our students, faculty, and staff.  To tell us what you think about any of these databases, fill out our Database Trial Feedback form.

The current crisis has caused unexpected and undue hardship for countless individuals and families. Every U.S. state provides its citizens with a variety of social service programs and benefits, however, it can be difficult to locate information to these services because states structure them in different ways. The purpose of a new Social Services Resources guide is to make it easier for you to find social service programs in your area.  Links lead to health, housing, nutrition, and other assistance programs in each state, as well as links to national sources and program search tools. To find services in your area, visit the Social Services Resources guide.

Notice: Upcoming System Maintenance

Two resources licensed by the PG Library, Academic Writer and Skillsoft Books, will see maintenance windows soon that will, unfortunately, cause downtime.  The sources will be inaccessible during the system maintenance windows, so please plan ahead accordingly.  Additionally, EZProxy, our authentication service, will see a system update that may cause some downtime.  Below are details and messages from the vendors:

Academic Writer

From APA's Support team: Due to scheduled maintenance, Academic Writer will be unavailable on Monday, December 9, 2019 from 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. Please be sure to complete and save your work before then, as all services will be unavailable during that time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Skillsoft Books

From Skillsoft's Support team: In the continuous effort to maintain a strong security and privacy posture, Skillsoft will conduct a series of infrastructure upgrades in the next few months. The upgrades require Skillsoft Books downtime due to the nature of the disruptive operation.  It is our hope that the impact will be less in duration, however, in the interest of setting conservative expectations, up to 12-hours should be anticipated.  We apologize for the inconvenience these extended maintenance windows will cause.

The maintenance windows are scheduled as follows:

  • Saturday - December 14th, 2019: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM Eastern Time

  • Saturday - January 18th, 2020: 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM Eastern Time

  • Saturday - February 8th, 2020: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM Eastern Time

  • Saturday - March 13th, 2020: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM Eastern Time

EZProxy (Authentication)

System maintenance for EZProxy's United States Data Center is scheduled for December 15, 2019 from 1:00 AM - 05:20 AM Eastern Time.  While no downtime has been indicated, as with any system update, there may be some period where authenticating into any licensed databases or resources may not be available during the window.

Did you know every course at PG links to either a library research guide focused on a topic area related to the course's content or a resource guide with customized resources, required or suggested reading links, and/or research tips just for that course?  These research guides are created by the PG Library to aid your research and access things like assigned readings and recommended databases more easily.

For quicker access to these guides, starting on Friday, November 22, 2019, the Library link will be located in the toolbar in every classroom!  After the update, you can easily access curated Library resources for your course with fewer steps than before. To find your course's guide:

  • In your course's toolbar, click More Tools, which will expand a menu of options.
  • Select the Library link, which is always at the bottom of the list.

The guide will open in a new browser window or tab, so you can keep working in your course without navigating away from the section you are in.

Please note, some courses may still also list the Library link under Content >> Academic Tools.  This is the same link and resource.  These links are being phased out over time, so make sure to learn our new location going forward.

Also rolling out on Friday, November 22, all of the Library’s topic, course, and resource guides (like database walkthroughs) will share the same design and navigation as well.  Similar guides (like nearly identical guides on general topics like business or nursing) will also consolidate to one guide. Some small changes to the search box on course guides and the Library's homepage will also appear to help clarify tool purpose and functionality.

Screenshot of new look and feel for course guides

Credo Instruct creates videos and tutorials on essential research and information seeking skills, all of which we link to on our Videos & Tutorials page.  Content is added periodically, so to help you find the latest, below are several recently added videos and tutorials about topics varying from writing an annotated bibliography to researching a persuasive essay. Clicking the name of any item will open it in a new browser tab or window.
