Parts of a Citation

Chapter of a book

You may also come accross a chapter of an ebook in a citation list. These look like a combination of an article and book citation, an can be a little confusing when you first look at them. Below is a citation for a chapter of a book.  There are a couple of ways to tell that the item is from a chapter of a book rather than an article from a journal or an entire book.

  • There will be multiple people's names listed and they will be found in two places of the citation.  The first set of author name(s) listed will be the actual author(s) of the chapter.  The second set of names are the editor(s) of the book.  Another clue is (Eds.) after the second set of names. That signifies that they are the editors
  • Another indicator is the word In.  That little word indicates that the title that precedes it can be found in the title that follows it.

A difference between books and a chapter from a book is that the chapter will have page numbers listed.  That indicates precisely where in the book the chapter is located.
