Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is conclusive in its purpose, as it tries to quantify a problem and understand how prevalent it is by looking for projectable results to a larger population.  Sample sizes are large.

Some of the data collection used in Quantitative research are:

  • Surveys (online, phone, paper)
  • Audits
  • Controlled observations
  • Experiments

Basically, numbers are used to determine the who, what, when, where and why of a health event.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative Research

It is used when you don't know what the outcome will be.  It's a way to explore theories or ideas about a topic.

Qualitative research data is descriptive in nature.  The sample sizes are small.

Some of the data collection used in Qualitative research are:

  • In-depth interviews
  • Uninterrupted observation
  • Focus groups
  • Ethnographic participation/observation
