Tips on Keyword Searching

Tip: Exact Phrase Searching

You can search for exact phrases using "quotation marks" when you search.  Why is this sometimes helpful? For example, searching for virtual teams will bring up the phrase virtual teams, as well as items where the word virtual and the word teams aren't necessarily together.  While the databases will do a good job guessing you want the phrase virtual teams, sometimes they need a little push.  Using "quotation marks" around a phrase like this will help it understand you want that precise phrase: "virtual teams"

Tip: Using the Title and other Advanced Search options

Both ProQuest databases (ABI/INFORM) and EBSCOhost (Business Source Ultimate) offer advanced search features that let you limit your search words to just one field.  "Fields" in searching include Title, Author, Subject Heading, Abstract, or All Text, amongst other options.  A quick way to find materials is to limit your search to just the Title field.  If you do this, make sure to keep your search simple.  You can also use the Advanced Search features to search within a different field at the same time.  For example, the screenshot below demonstrates a Subject search for social media in business.

Tip: Filter Results with the Source Type option

You can filter your results list to only show a specific type of publication.  For example, let's say your search results include a lot of e-books, but for this assignment you only want articles.  You can use the Source Type option in either ProQuest or EBSCOhost databases to look at only the kind of publication you want to read.  The Source Type option is in the column to the left of your results in either platform.
