Quantitative Research

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is conclusive in its purpose. It tries to quantify a problem and understand how prevalent the problem is by looking for projectable results to a larger population.  Sample sizes are large.

Some of the data collection used in quantitative research are:

  • Surveys (online, phone, paper)
  • Audits
  • Controlled observations
  • Experiments

Basically, numbers are used to determine the who, what, when, where and why.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is used when the outcome of the research is unknown.  It's a way to explore theories or ideas about a topic.

Qualitative research data is descriptive in nature.  The sample sizes are small.

Some of the data collection used in qualitative research are:

  • In-depth interviews
  • Uninterrupted observation
  • Focus groups
  • Ethnographic participation/observation
